EXPERIMENTS IN INFORMATION DESIGN — Week 5
Visualization (Part 1)
Task (Week 1)
- Choose a dataset (one of the following):
If you feel comfortable, you can also use a dataset outside of this list.
-
Explore & clean the data
- First pass with OpenRefine (or similar).
-
Quick visualizations
- Generate first plots with RawGraphs.
-
Sketching (pen & paper)
- Map data dimensions to visual elements.
-
Write a recipe
- Step-by-step “from data to graphic.”
-
Tool reflection
- Which tool might work for your final visualization?
-
Find references
- Find one to three projects that are similar to yours. Describe how the mapping works. Try to find out which tools were used.
Deliverable
- Short documentation (PDF or scan): dataset choice, one RawGraphs chart, at least 2 sketches, 1 recipe.
- Bring to Week 6.
EXPERIMENTS IN INFORMATION DESIGN — Week 6
Visualization (Part 2)
Task (Week 2)
Produce your visualization idea using a tool of your choice.
Possible tools:
- d3.js
- TouchDesigner
- Illustrator
- Blender
- Pen & paper
- or another tool you decide on
Deliverable
- Final visualization (as image, PDF, link, or physical artifact).
- Short explanation (max. 150 words):
- What question are you asking of the data?
- Why did you choose this tool?
- What mapping decisions did you make?
